Celledelingen, meaning cell division, is the biological process by which a parent cell divides to form daughter cells. It is essential for growth, development, tissue maintenance, and reproduction in many organisms. There are two main types: mitosis, which produces two genetically identical somatic cells, and meiosis, which yields four genetically diverse gametes with half the chromosome number.

In mitosis and subsequent cytokinesis, a cell divides to form two genetically identical diploid daughter cells. The stages are prophase, prometaphase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase, followed by cytokinesis that splits the cytoplasm. During mitosis, chromosomes condense, align at the center, and sister chromatids separate to opposite poles, ensuring equal distribution of genetic material.

Meiosis consists of two successive divisions, meiosis I and meiosis II, and reduces the chromosome number by half to produce haploid gametes. Key features include pairing and crossing over of homologous chromosomes in prophase I and the independent assortment of chromosomes in meiosis I and II, generating genetic variation. Cytokinesis follows each division, yielding four haploid daughter cells.

Celledelingen is tightly regulated by the cell cycle, including checkpoints that monitor DNA integrity and chromosome attachment before progression. Differences in cytokinesis exist between cell types: animal cells form a contractile ring that pinches the membrane to create two cells, while plant cells form a cell plate that develops into separating cell walls.
