Cell cultures are a widely used technique in biological research and various industries. They involve growing cells outside of their original organism in a laboratory setting. This is typically achieved by providing cells with a nutrient-rich liquid medium, often containing salts, sugars, amino acids, and vitamins, in a controlled environment such as an incubator that maintains optimal temperature, humidity, and gas concentrations.

The process of establishing a cell culture, known as cell culture initiation, usually involves obtaining cells from a tissue sample or a primary cell line. These cells are then transferred to a sterile culture vessel, like a petri dish or flask, containing the growth medium. Over time, the cells divide and multiply, forming a population of cells that can be studied or used for various applications.

Cell cultures offer several advantages. They allow for the study of cellular processes in a controlled and reproducible manner, free from the complexities of a whole organism. They are also crucial for drug discovery and testing, vaccine production, and the study of diseases. Furthermore, cell cultures can be used to produce specific proteins or biomolecules.

However, cell cultures also have limitations. They may not always perfectly replicate the in vivo environment, and cells can undergo genetic or phenotypic changes over prolonged culturing.
