Historically, catapultaatioiden played a crucial role in siege warfare before the advent of gunpowder-based artillery. They were designed to hurl stones, incendiaries, or other projectile types over walls or into enemy ranks, often with significant destructive impact. Their development is attributed to innovations by ancient civilizations such as the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and Chinese, each adapting the design to suit specific tactical needs.

Various types of catapultaatioiden existed, including ballistas, onagers, and mangonels. Ballistas resembled giant crossbows and employed torsion power to project bolts or stones.
