Catalog cabinets, also known as card catalogs or dictionary cabinets, are specialized pieces of furniture designed for organizing and storing index cards or catalog cards. These cabinets were a cornerstone of libraries, archives, and businesses before the widespread adoption of digital systems. They typically feature numerous small, shallow drawers, each designed to hold a collection of cards.

The primary purpose of a catalog cabinet was to provide a systematic way to index and retrieve information. In libraries, each card would represent a book or other item in the collection, containing details such as the title, author, subject, and a unique call number. Users would consult the catalog to locate specific items or to browse by subject. The drawers were usually labeled with letters of the alphabet or subject headings to facilitate browsing.

The construction of catalog cabinets varied, but they were commonly made of wood, such as oak or maple, or metal. The drawers often had small brass or metal pulls and sometimes a label holder. The sheer number of drawers in a large library catalog could make the cabinets quite substantial in size and weight.

With the advent of computers and digital databases, the use of physical catalog cabinets has significantly declined. Most libraries and institutions have transitioned to online public access catalogs (OPACs). However, some older institutions may still maintain their historical catalog cabinets as a testament to past information management practices or for specific collections. They are now often considered antique furniture or historical artifacts rather than functional library tools.
