Cardeners, also known as carding machines, are mechanical devices used primarily in the textile industry to align and straighten fibers before spinning or weaving. The process of carding removes impurities such as dust, seeds, and short fibers, while also blending and interlacing the longer fibers to create a continuous web. This web, known as a sliver, is then further processed into yarn or roving.

The basic principle of carding involves passing fibers through a series of rotating cylinders covered with fine, evenly spaced metal teeth or wires. These cylinders, called carding rollers or card clothes, work in tandem to draw, clean, and align the fibers. The fibers are fed into the machine and gradually thinned and straightened as they pass through multiple stages of rollers moving at progressively faster speeds. This action ensures that the fibers are parallel and evenly distributed, reducing tangling and improving the quality of the final product.

Cardeners are essential in both traditional and modern textile manufacturing. In hand-spinning and small-scale production, manual carding tools like hand cards are used to prepare fibers for spinning. Industrial carding machines, however, are far more efficient and capable of handling large volumes of raw materials such as cotton, wool, or synthetic fibers. These machines are integral to the production of high-quality textiles, including fabrics used in clothing, carpets, and other woven goods.

Beyond textiles, carding technology has applications in other industries, such as paper manufacturing, where similar principles are used to prepare pulp fibers.
