Carcinogenicity refers to the ability of a substance or agent to cause cancer. Chemical carcinogens are often found in environmental pollutants, industrial chemicals, and certain food additives. Not all exposures to carcinogens result in cancer. The human body has mechanisms to repair DNA damage and eliminate damaged cells. However, prolonged or high-level exposure can overwhelm these defenses.
