Carcassen is a coastal municipality on Isla Nereid in the Nereid Archipelago. It centers on a natural harbor and hillside districts. The population is about 11,000.

History: Founded in the 12th century as a fishing and trading port. The name derives from Carca, an old local word for harbor, plus sen. It grew as a waypoint for maritime routes, developed shipyards in the 19th century, and shifted to fishing and tourism after World War II.

Geography and climate: Located at the harbor head, sheltered by a rocky promontory. Terrain includes olive groves, pine forests, and terraces. Climate is mild and maritime: cool summers, wet winters.

Economy: Harbor handles ferries to neighboring islands; local economy centers on seafood processing, hospitality, and crafts. Small-scale manufacturing exists.
