The name is formed from the core chemical feature, carbonate, with the diminutive suffix -illa.

In crystallography, carbonateilla is discussed as belonging to the calcite group, which typically crystallizes in a trigonal (rhombohedral) system and exhibits rhombohedral cleavage.
