canarios

Canarios is a Spanish term with several related meanings. It can refer to the inhabitants of the Canary Islands, to the archipelago itself, or to the domesticated canary bird (the species Serinus canaria) and its color.

The Canary Islands are an autonomous community of Spain located in the Atlantic Ocean, off the northwest coast of Africa. The archipelago comprises eight main islands: Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, and La Graciosa, with several islets. The capital functions are shared between Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The population is around 2.2 million. The economy relies on tourism, services, and agriculture (notably bananas, tomatoes, and wine). The islands have a mild subtropical climate and diverse landscapes, including volcanic peaks such as Teide on Tenerife, the highest point in Spain.

People from the islands are called canarios (masculine) or canarias (feminine). The culture includes distinct music (timple), cuisine, and festivals that vary by island. The islands also have diaspora communities in the Americas, especially in parts of Latin America and the Caribbean.

The canary bird (Serinus canaria) is native to the archipelago and was domesticated in captivity. Domestic canaries are bred in multiple colors and are commonly kept as pets. The wild ancestors of the domestic canary contributed to varieties bred for pet keeping worldwide. The term canary has also entered common usage as a reference to a bright yellow color.
