The term’s origin is linked to the word bougette, a small bag or pouch, and it spread into many languages through early accounting and administration. In Slavic languages and other traditions, the transliterated form Byudjet is commonly used to denote the budget.

In government, the budget combines revenue projections (such as taxes, fees, grants) with expenditure plans (public services, infrastructure, defense).
