Butoxides are a class of chemical compounds derived from butanol. They are alkoxides, specifically featuring a butoxy group (CH3CH2CH2CH2O-) bonded to a metal cation. The most common butoxides are those of alkali metals, such as sodium butoxide (CH3CH2CH2CH2ONa) and potassium butoxide (CH3CH2CH2CH2OK). Sodium butoxide and potassium butoxide are particularly useful in reactions where a strong, non-nucleophilic base is required. The preparation of butoxides usually involves the reaction of butanol with an alkali metal, such as sodium or potassium, or with a metal hydride. For example, sodium butoxide can be prepared by reacting sodium metal with butanol. These reactions are exothermic and require careful handling due to the reactivity of the alkali metals and the flammable nature of butanol. Butoxides are generally sensitive to moisture and air, reacting with water to regenerate butanol and the corresponding metal hydroxide, and with oxygen to form peroxides.
