Bungees are elastic cords that can stretch and then recoil, providing a combination of tension and energy absorption. They are used to secure goods, attach equipment, and absorb shock in a variety of applications. The term covers a range of products from simple load-securing cords to specialized lines used in adventure activities, such as recreational bungee jumping.

Most bungees consist of an elastic core made of natural latex rubber or a synthetic elastomer, surrounded by a woven sheath of polyester, polypropylene, or nylon. The core may be a single strand or multiple strands bound together, and the sheath protects the core from abrasion and environmental exposure. Protective sleeves or caps are sometimes added near hooks to reduce wear and prevent snagging.

Common uses include securing bundles and cargo such as tarps and luggage, binding down loads on trucks or boats, and tying equipment during sports or camping. In recreation, longer, heavier cords are used as suspension lines in bungee jumping, where energy is absorbed by the cord’s extension as the jumper descends.

Care and safety: bungees deteriorate with age, UV exposure, heat, and ozone. Inspect for cracking, loss of elasticity, or broken fibers; replace when deterioration is evident. Do not overload or bypass safety sleeves, avoid contact with sharp edges, and replace worn cords promptly. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Regular inspection and proper use help prevent recoil injuries and environmental damage.
