Buisleiding is a Dutch term for a pipeline, a system of tubes that transports liquids or gases over distance. Such networks are used for drinking water distribution, wastewater, gas supply, oil and petroleum transport, district heating, and industrial processes. Pipelines may be buried, laid above ground, or routed through tunnels, and they connect treatment plants, storage facilities, and end users.

Pipelines are built from materials such as steel, ductile iron, PVC, and HDPE, chosen for pressure, temperature, chemical compatibility, and soil conditions. Joints may be welded, flanged, or use compression fittings. A typical installation includes pipes, valves, pumps or compressors, meters, and insulation. In urban areas construction requires permits, trenching, and coordination with other utilities.

Operation relies on controlled pressure and continuous monitoring. Integrity management uses inspections, pressure testing, corrosion protection, and, for liquids and gas, specialized devices that travel inside the pipe to assess condition. Maintenance involves section isolation, component replacement, and coating or cathodic protection to prevent corrosion.

Pipelines are subject to national and international standards and safety regulations. Drinking-water networks follow water-quality rules, while gas and oil lines adhere to energy safety standards and operator certification. Environmental impact, risk assessment, and emergency planning are typically required for construction and operation.
