A bufferer is any agent, device, or substance that provides a buffer—an intermediate storage or cushion designed to absorb variation in input, control the rate of change, or protect downstream systems from fluctuations. Bufferers can be physical components, chemical substances, or software constructs, and they are used to smooth out processes across multiple domains.

In chemistry, bufferers are buffering agents that resist changes in pH when small amounts of acid or base are introduced. Common buffer systems pair a weak acid with its conjugate base or a weak base with its conjugate acid, such as acetic acid with acetate or carbonic acid with bicarbonate. The effectiveness of a buffer depends on its capacity and the closeness of the system’s pH to the buffer’s pKa value.

In computing and data processing, a bufferer is a component that stores data temporarily to accommodate speed differences between producers and consumers. Benefits include smoother data flow and reduced jitter, while drawbacks can include added latency, wasted memory, and, in networks, potential bufferbloat.
