Bubbletight (often written as bubble-tight) is a term used to describe a seal, joint, or valve that provides no detectable leakage of gas or liquid under a specified pressure difference. In practice, achieving bubbletight performance means that the seal prevents leakage to the limit of the test method being used, ensuring containment and system integrity in critical environments.

The term derives from the bubble test, a simple leakage assessment in which the area around a seal is submerged or exposed to a liquid and observed for bubble formation. If no bubbles appear, the seal is considered bubbletight for that test setup. In more stringent contexts, bubbletight may be quantified using other leak-testing methods such as pressure decay or helium mass spectrometry, with acceptance criteria expressed as a maximum allowable leak rate (for example, down to 10^-9 to 10^-7 atm·cm^3/s, depending on the system and standards).

Bubbletight performance is important across industries such as vacuum technology, cryogenics, semiconductor manufacturing, chemical processing, aerospace, and nuclear containment. It is typically required for valves, gaskets, flanges, and other sealing interfaces where even small leaks can compromise process purity, safety, or experimental results.

Limitations and maintenance considerations include the dependence on seating force, gasket material, surface finish, temperature, and cycling. Seals can degrade over time due to wear, chemical attack, or thermal expansion, which may reduce bubbletight capability. Regular leak testing and appropriate maintenance are essential to sustain bubbletight performance over a component’s service life.
