Brosylates are organic compounds that are salts or esters of brosylic acid, also known as p-bromobenzenesulfonic acid. The brosylate group, often abbreviated as Bs or OBS, is a sulfonate functional group derived from p-bromobenzenesulfonic acid. In organic chemistry, brosylates are frequently employed as leaving groups in substitution and elimination reactions. Their effectiveness as leaving groups is attributed to the stability of the resulting brosylate anion, which is resonance-stabilized and electron-withdrawing. This makes the carbon atom to which the brosylate is attached more susceptible to nucleophilic attack. Brosylates are typically synthesized by reacting an alcohol with p-bromobenzenesulfonyl chloride. The resulting brosylate ester can then be displaced by a nucleophile or undergo elimination. They are considered good leaving groups, comparable to tosylates and mesylates, offering an alternative in synthetic strategies. The presence of the bromine atom in the para position of the benzene ring influences the electronic properties and reactivity of the brosylate group.
