Bronzöntés is a Hungarian term referring to the casting of bronze. This ancient metallurgical technique involves melting bronze, typically an alloy of copper and tin, and pouring it into a mold to create a desired shape. The process has been used for millennia to produce a wide range of objects, from weaponry and tools to intricate sculptures and decorative items.

The creation of a bronze casting generally begins with the design and construction of a mold. Molds can be made from various materials, including sand, clay, or plaster, depending on the complexity and detail required. For more intricate pieces, lost-wax casting (cire perdue) is often employed. In this method, a wax model of the desired object is created, then coated with a refractory material. When the mold is heated, the wax melts and drains away, leaving a hollow cavity into which molten bronze is poured.

Once the bronze has cooled and solidified, the mold is broken away, and the raw casting is revealed. Subsequent finishing steps are crucial for bronze artwork. These can include removing sprues and gates (channels through which the metal flowed), filing, grinding, and polishing to achieve the desired surface texture. Patination, a chemical treatment that alters the surface color of the bronze, is often applied to enhance its aesthetic appeal and provide a protective layer. The resulting bronze objects are known for their durability and artistic potential.
