Bronchoalveolaris refers to structures within the lungs. It describes the relationship between the bronchioles and the alveoli. The bronchoalveolar lavage, often abbreviated as BAL, is a medical procedure used to obtain samples from the lower respiratory tract, specifically the bronchioles and alveoli. During a BAL, a bronchoscope is inserted into the lungs, and a saline solution is instilled into a specific segment of the lung. This fluid is then suctioned back out, collecting cells and other substances from the bronchoalveolar space. The collected fluid is then sent to a laboratory for analysis.

It is commonly used to identify infections, such as pneumonia, by detecting the presence of bacteria, viruses, or fungi. It can also be used to diagnose inflammatory lung diseases, like sarcoidosis or hypersensitivity pneumonitis, by examining the types and numbers of cells present. Furthermore, BAL can be employed in the evaluation of interstitial lung diseases and the assessment of occupational lung disorders. The cellular composition and presence of specific microorganisms in the BAL fluid provide crucial diagnostic information for clinicians.
