Production and applications: Bromine is typically produced from brine by oxidation and separation, after which bromine-containing reagents are formed for pharmaceutical synthesis, agrochemicals, dye intermediates, and flame retardants. Methyl bromide has seen reduced use due to environmental concerns. Brominated compounds are also encountered as byproducts or residuals in water treatment and in occupational settings.

Safety and environmental considerations: Many bromine-containing compounds are toxic to humans and ecosystems, with some persistent and bioaccumulative. In water, bromide can be oxidized to form brominated disinfection byproducts during chlorination. Regulation aims to limit releases, phase out harmful substances, and encourage safer alternatives in flame retardants and pesticides.
