In retail and bakery operations, a breadkeeper is responsible for receiving shipments, inspecting quality, labeling and dating products, rotating stock using first-in, first-out methods, and maintaining attractive, well-stocked displays. The role supports freshness and inventory control, and duties vary by region and business size.

A bread keeper, or bread box, is a container designed to store bread and slow staling by balancing air exchange and humidity. Common materials include wood, ceramic, metal, glass, and plastic. Designs range from ventilated boxes to airtight containers, some with integrated cutting surfaces or crumb trays. Modern variants emphasize easy cleaning and compatibility with kitchen decor.

For best quality at room temperature, keep bread in a bread keeper away from direct sun and heat. Avoid refrigeration for ordinary bread, which speeds staling, but refrigerate or freeze for long-term storage. If freezing, wrap tightly and thaw at room temperature.

Bread storage containers have a long history, evolving from ceramic crocks and wooden bread boxes to contemporary plastic and metal designs. The term “bread keeper” is sometimes used interchangeably with bread box or bread bin.
