Bowmaking is the craft of constructing bows for archery and for bowed string instruments. It includes traditional and modern archery bows—wooden, laminated, and composite—as well as the creation of violin, viola, and cello bows. The process combines woodworking, heat shaping, and precise tuning to achieve suitable stiffness, weight, and balance.

Archery bowmaking traditionally emphasizes selecting appropriate wood such as yew, ash, or hickory, or employing laminates in laminated bows. The process involves shaping the limbs, tillering to ensure symmetric flex under draw, installing string nocks and tips, and finishing with varnish, oil, or protective coatings. Modern archery also uses fiberglass or carbon fiber composites.

Violin bowmaking centers on pernambuco or Brazilwood sticks, shaped with a precise camber to create the desired arc. The frog, typically ebony with inlays and metal fittings, is assembled with horsehair secured and tensioned by a screw mechanism. Steps include wood selection, heat bending, planing, shaping the frog, attaching hair, winding, and balancing for playability.

Historically, archery bows reflect regional traditions and technological advances across cultures, while violin bows developed in Europe from the 17th century onward, with notable centers such as Mirecourt and Paris. In modern times, bowmaking ranges from small artisanal workshops to larger-scale production, with practitioners often specializing in one type of bow.
