Botnetien is a term that refers to the individuals or groups who create, manage, and operate botnets. Botnets are networks of compromised computers, often referred to as "bots" or "zombies," that are controlled remotely by a bot herder. These compromised machines can be anything from personal computers and servers to Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The botnetien utilizes these infected devices to carry out various malicious activities without the knowledge or consent of their owners.

The motivations behind becoming a botnetien vary widely. Some engage in these activities for financial gain, using botnets to send spam, conduct distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks for extortion, or steal sensitive information like credit card numbers and login credentials. Others may be motivated by ideology, using botnets for cyber warfare or political activism. The technical expertise required to build and maintain a botnet can range from basic scripting knowledge to sophisticated programming and network exploitation skills.

Botnetien often operate in a clandestine manner, using anonymizing techniques and decentralized command-and-control (C2) structures to evade detection and law enforcement. The decentralized nature of botnets makes them particularly difficult to dismantle, as shutting down one C2 server does not necessarily disable the entire network. Law enforcement agencies worldwide actively pursue botnetien, often in collaboration with cybersecurity firms, to disrupt these criminal operations and protect internet users.
