Botaniken, commonly referred to as botany, is the scientific study of plant life. It encompasses the structure, function, growth, reproduction, evolution, and ecology of plants, including flowering plants, conifers, ferns, mosses, and certain algae. The field investigates how plants interact with their environments and contribute to ecosystems, agriculture, and human society.

Historically, botany emerged from natural history and classification traditions in ancient times, with early texts such as Theophrastus's Historia Plantarum. The discipline was formalized in the 18th century by Carl Linnaeus, who pioneered modern taxonomy. The 19th and 20th centuries brought advances in plant physiology, genetics, and microscopy, culminating in modern molecular and computational approaches.

Major subfields include plant anatomy and morphology, plant physiology, taxonomy and systematics, ecology, genetics and molecular biology, biochemistry, paleobotany, ethnobotany, and applied areas such as horticulture, agronomy, and plant pathology. Interdisciplinary work links botany with agriculture, conservation biology, and environmental sciences.

Methods combine field observation, specimen collection and herbarium study, and laboratory experiments. Researchers use light and electron microscopy, imaging techniques, plant culturing, biochemical assays, genetics, genomics, and phylogenetics. Data analysis often relies on bioinformatics and ecological modeling.

Botany supports food security, medicine, biodiversity conservation, and the study of climate change. It provides core knowledge for crop improvement, sustainable management of natural resources, and understanding plant–environment interactions.
