Boran is a term used in the Horn of Africa to refer to both a culturally distinct group and a cattle breed associated with that region. The name is often written as Borana in some contexts, and the two are closely linked through homeland and history.

Boran people, also known as Borana, are an Oromo sub-group primarily located in the Borana Zone of southern Ethiopia and parts of northern Kenya. They are traditionally pastoralists who rely on cattle herding as a central part of their economy and social life. The Boran speak the Borana dialect of the Oromo language and have a long-standing cultural system that includes the gadaa, a class- and age-set based governance structure. Their livelihoods and social organization have historically been tied to seasonal migrations, water and grazing management, and a deep knowledge of arid- and semi-arid environments. In contemporary times, they navigate changes brought by modernization, market integration, and shifting land use.

Boran cattle refer to a large, hardy cattle breed developed in the Borana region and widely found across East Africa. The breed is valued for its adaptability to dry conditions, tolerance to heat, and ability to subsist on sparse forage. It is kept for both milk and meat, and has been used in crossbreeding programs to improve productivity in pastoralist and smallholder systems in Ethiopia, Kenya, and surrounding areas.
