Boosterprikken refers to an additional dose of a vaccine given after the initial immunization series to restore or enhance protection. They are used when immunity wanes over time or when the circulating pathogens have changed, potentially reducing the effectiveness of the original vaccination.

The aim of a booster is to re-stimulate the immune system, increasing antibody levels and strengthening immune memory. This can lead to longer-lasting protection against infection or severe disease. The exact timing and need for a booster depend on the vaccine, the person’s age and health, and current public health guidelines.

Booster campaigns are common for several vaccines. Examples include tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (Tdap/Td) boosters to maintain protection in adults; pneumococcal vaccines for older adults and other at‑risk groups; and annual influenza vaccines. In recent years, many countries also recommended booster doses for COVID-19 in specific populations, with schedules adjusted as more data became available. Safety and side effects of boosters are generally similar to those of the primary doses, often including temporary soreness at the injection site, fatigue or fever. Serious adverse events are rare. Contraindications exist for individuals with certain severe allergic reactions or specific medical conditions, and decisions about boosters should follow national or regional guidelines.
