Bodemstudies, or soil studies, is the multidisciplinary field that investigates soils as dynamic natural bodies that support ecosystems, agriculture, and built environments. It covers how soils form (pedogenesis), how they differ in composition and structure, and how their distribution affects land use and environmental processes.

Core subfields include pedology, soil physics, soil chemistry, soil biology and microbiology, soil fertility and nutrient cycling, soil mineralogy, and soil management and restoration. The discipline examines properties such as texture, structure, porosity, pH, organic matter, cation exchange capacity, moisture regime, and mineralogy, and how these influence productivity and environmental function.

Methods combine field work with laboratory analyses, soil surveys, and mapping. Practitioners describe soil profiles, collect samples for chemical and physical testing, and use geospatial tools such as GIS and remote sensing to create soil maps and models of distribution and change over time.

Applications include agriculture and horticulture, forestry, land-use planning, watershed and biodiversity conservation, climate change research (notably soil carbon storage), and the remediation and restoration of contaminated or degraded land.

Education and research occur in earth science, agronomy, environmental science, and geography programs. International coordination and standards are provided by organizations such as the International Union of Soil Sciences, which promotes soil science research, education, and policy relevance.

Challenges facing bodemstudies include soil erosion and degradation, salinization, compaction, pollution, data gaps, and the need for sustainable management practices. Trends emphasize soil health, precision agriculture, digital soil mapping, and the integration of soil information into land management and climate strategies.
