Blodplasman is the liquid component of blood, making up about 55% of its total volume. It is primarily composed of water, accounting for approximately 92% of plasma by volume. The remaining 8% consists of dissolved proteins, glucose, mineral ions, hormones, carbon dioxide, platelets, and blood cells themselves. Plasma is crucial for maintaining blood pressure and volume, and it plays a vital role in the immune system by transporting antibodies.

The proteins found in plasma are essential for various bodily functions. Albumin, the most abundant plasma protein, helps regulate osmotic pressure, preventing fluid from leaking out of blood vessels. Globulins include antibodies, which are key to fighting infections, and transport proteins that carry lipids, hormones, and other substances. Fibrinogen is necessary for blood clotting.

Plasma also carries dissolved substances throughout the body. Glucose provides energy to cells. Electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and chloride help maintain fluid balance and nerve function. Hormones transported in plasma act as chemical messengers, regulating growth, metabolism, and other processes. Carbon dioxide, a waste product of metabolism, is transported from tissues to the lungs for exhalation.

The production of plasma occurs mainly in the liver, which synthesizes most of the plasma proteins. The color of plasma is typically straw-yellow due to the presence of bilirubin, a byproduct of red blood cell breakdown. When separated from the cellular components of blood, plasma can be used in medical treatments, such as transfusions to replenish lost volume or to provide specific proteins to patients with deficiencies.
