bladstilker, also known as leaf stalks or petioles in botanical terminology, are the slender structures that connect the leaf blade to the stem. They position the leaf for optimal light capture and provide a conduit for water and nutrients between the stem and the leaf tissues. In many plants the leaf blade is carried by a petiole, while in others the leaf is sessile and has no stalk.

Anatomically, the petiole contains vascular tissue that links the leaf veins to the stem, and it may include supportive tissues such as sclerenchyma. Variation among species includes petiole length, thickness, and whether the stalk is winged or articulated.
