Bladenectoderm is a name used in some embryology discussions to denote a proposed subpopulation of ectodermal cells that is posited to form blade-like outgrowths during early development. The term is not part of the standard, widely accepted lexicon of germ-layer specification, and its validity remains debated.

Origin and characteristics: In the proposed framework, bladenectoderm would arise from the lateral edge of the ectoderm during gastrulation, near the neural ectoderm, and follow a distinct differentiation program that yields blade-like epidermal structures. Proponents emphasize a unique gene expression signature and morphological behavior distinct from conventional surface ectoderm.

Evidence and scope: Reported in a limited set of studies across several taxa, often based on lineage tracing or differential marker expression. However, replication is scarce and interpretations vary; many researchers treat bladenectoderm as a provisional label rather than a defined lineage.
