The blackcap is a small passerine bird belonging to the genus Sylvia. In Europe, the common name typically refers to Sylvia atricapilla, also known as the Eurasian blackcap. This species is found across temperate Europe and western Asia, migrating south to Africa and parts of southern Asia for the winter. Male blackcaps are distinguished by a distinctive black cap on their heads, contrasting with their grey upperparts and whitish underparts. Females and juvenile birds have a reddish-brown cap. They are migratory birds, with a distinct song characterized by fluting and warbling notes.

Blackcaps inhabit a variety of woodland and garden habitats, preferring areas with dense undergrowth. Their diet consists mainly of insects, spiders, berries, and fruits, with the proportion of fruit increasing in autumn. The breeding season typically sees the female lay a clutch of 3-8 eggs in a cup-shaped nest constructed from grass, twigs, and other plant materials, often hidden in dense vegetation. Both parents participate in incubation and feeding the young. The species is generally considered common and widespread, though population numbers can fluctuate due to environmental factors and wintering ground conditions.
