Bitumis is a dense, viscous hydrocarbon material that occurs naturally as asphalt or is produced as a residue in crude oil refining. It is insoluble in water and is valued for its waterproofing, adhesive, and binding properties. In construction, bitumis is most widely used as a binder in asphalt concrete for road surfaces and as a component in roofing and sealing products.

Bitumis derives from natural deposits, such as asphalt lakes and tar sands, or from refining processes where heavier fractions are upgraded and blended with additives. Its chemical composition consists mainly of hydrocarbons, with asphaltenes contributing to its high viscosity and aging resistance. Bitumis can be modified to alter performance; common modifications include polymerization (polymer-modified bitumens) to improve elasticity and temperature resistance, and oxidation (air-blown bitumen) to increase hardness for roofing applications.

Typical uses include asphalt pavement, where bitumis blends with aggregates to create durable, load-bearing surfaces. It is also used in weatherproofing membranes, roof shingles, damp-proofing coatings, and waterproof sealants. In road construction, reclaimed asphalt pavement allows for recycling of bitumis-containing material, reducing waste and resource consumption.

Environmental and safety considerations involve handling at elevated temperatures, emissions during heating, and potential leaching if improperly spilled. Bitumis can be recycled and upgraded, and modern practices emphasize lower emissions, longer-lasting formulations, and responsible management of byproducts in refining and recycling streams.
