Bistabiilityteen, known more commonly as bistability, is a property of certain systems that exhibit two distinct and stable states. These states are mutually exclusive, meaning the system can only occupy one at any given time. To transition from one stable state to the other, an external trigger or input is typically required. Once the trigger is removed, the system remains in its new state.

This phenomenon is fundamental to many technological applications. In electronics, a bistable multivibrator, often called a flip-flop, is a classic example. It can store a single bit of information, representing either a 0 or a 1, by existing in one of its two stable states. This forms the basis of memory in computers and digital circuits.

Beyond electronics, bistability can be observed in mechanical systems. For instance, a toggle switch is bistable; it remains either on or off until manually flipped. In biology, certain protein configurations can exhibit bistability, playing roles in cellular signaling pathways and gene regulation. The concept also extends to physics, where phenomena like magnetic hysteresis demonstrate bistability in the magnetization of materials. The key characteristic across all these examples is the presence of two stable equilibria, with a mechanism for switching between them.
