Bipolaarikytkentä, often translated as bipolar junction transistor (BJT), is a fundamental semiconductor device used for amplifying or switching electronic signals. It consists of three layers of semiconductor material, each doped with impurities to create a specific electrical characteristic. The three layers are emitter, base, and collector. There are two main types of bipolar junction transistors: NPN and PNP.

In an NPN transistor, the base layer is made of p-type semiconductor material, while the emitter and collector layers are made of n-type material. The opposite is true for a PNP transistor, where the base is n-type and the emitter and collector are p-type. The operation of a BJT relies on the control of current flow between the collector and emitter by a smaller current flowing into or out of the base.

When a small current is applied to the base, it allows a much larger current to flow from the collector to the emitter (in NPN) or from the emitter to the collector (in PNP). This current amplification is the primary function of a transistor when used as an amplifier. By varying the small base current, the larger collector-emitter current can be precisely controlled, leading to amplification of the input signal.

Alternatively, a BJT can be used as a switch. By applying a sufficient base current, the transistor can be driven into saturation, allowing maximum current to flow between collector and emitter, effectively closing the switch. Conversely, by removing the base current, the transistor can be turned off, blocking current flow and opening the switch. This switching capability is crucial in digital electronics for creating logic gates and memory elements. The understanding and application of bipolar junction transistors have been vital in the development of modern electronic devices and integrated circuits.
