Some bioplastics are biodegradable, while others are not.

The production of bioplastics often involves fermenting plant-based sugars to produce molecules like lactic acid, which can then be polymerized into polylactic acid (PLA), a common bioplastic. Other bioplastics include polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), starch blends, and cellulose-based plastics. The choice of raw material and production process influences the properties of the resulting bioplastic, such as its strength, flexibility, and thermal resistance.

Bioplastics offer several potential environmental benefits. Their production can reduce reliance on fossil fuels and potentially lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional plastics. Biodegradable bioplastics can decompose under specific environmental conditions, such as in industrial composting facilities, reducing the accumulation of persistent plastic waste. However, the biodegradability of bioplastics is highly dependent on the specific type of bioplastic and the disposal environment. Not all bioplastics biodegrade easily or quickly, and improper disposal can still lead to environmental pollution.

The applications of bioplastics are diverse and growing, including food packaging, disposable tableware, agricultural films, textiles, and even in biomedical devices.
