Biomaszsaenergiák, commonly referred to as biomass energy, is a renewable energy source derived from organic matter. This organic matter can include a wide variety of materials such as agricultural crops, forest residues, animal waste, and even municipal solid waste. The fundamental principle behind biomass energy is the conversion of this stored solar energy, captured by plants through photosynthesis, into usable forms of heat or electricity.

There are several primary methods for converting biomass into energy. Combustion is the most straightforward, involving the burning of biomass to produce heat, which can then be used directly for heating or to generate steam for electricity production in power plants. Another method is gasification, which converts biomass into a combustible gas mixture (syngas) at high temperatures in a low-oxygen environment. This syngas can then be burned to produce heat or electricity, or further processed into biofuels. Anaerobic digestion is a biological process where microorganisms break down organic matter in the absence of oxygen, producing biogas, primarily methane and carbon dioxide. Biogas can be used for heating, electricity generation, or purified into biomethane for use in natural gas grids or as a vehicle fuel. Lastly, fermentation can convert biomass, particularly sugary or starchy materials, into liquid biofuels like ethanol.

Biomass energy offers several advantages, including its renewability and potential for waste reduction. It can also contribute to energy security by diversifying a country's energy mix away from fossil fuels. However, its sustainability depends heavily on responsible sourcing and management practices to avoid negative impacts on land use, biodiversity, and air quality.
