Biogáz is a mixture of gases, primarily methane and carbon dioxide, produced from the anaerobic decomposition of organic matter. This organic matter can include a wide range of materials such as animal manure, sewage sludge, food waste, and agricultural residues. The process of biogas production is carried out by microorganisms in the absence of oxygen, a process known as anaerobic digestion.

The composition of biogáz varies depending on the feedstock and the specific digestion conditions, but it typically contains 50-75% methane (CH4), 25-50% carbon dioxide (CO2), and smaller amounts of other gases like hydrogen sulfide (H2S), nitrogen (N2), and hydrogen (H2). Methane is the primary combustible component of biogáz, making it a valuable source of renewable energy.

Biogáz can be utilized in several ways. It can be burned directly in boilers for heating or in engines to generate electricity and heat, a process known as combined heat and power (CHP). Biogáz can also be upgraded to biomethane, which has a high methane content and is chemically similar to natural gas. Upgraded biomethane can be injected into the natural gas grid or used as a fuel for vehicles.

The benefits of biogáz production include the generation of renewable energy, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by capturing methane that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere, and the production of digestate, a nutrient-rich byproduct that can be used as a fertilizer. This makes biogáz a significant contributor to a circular economy and sustainable waste management practices.
