Bioetika, or bioethics, is the interdisciplinary field that studies ethical issues arising from biology and medicine. It explores how advances in science affect human life, health, dignity, and the environment, and how to balance individual rights with social obligations.

Core concerns include respect for patient autonomy and informed consent; beneficence and non-maleficence; and justice, including fair access to care and resource distribution. Privacy and confidentiality of genetic information are central, as is protecting vulnerable populations in research and clinical care.

Key areas of focus include clinical ethics, research ethics, reproductive and genetic technologies, end-of-life decisions, organ donation, and public health ethics. Debates address genetic editing, stem cell research, assisted reproduction, euthanasia, pandemics, and triage.

History: The field emerged from medical ethics in the mid-20th century and was popularized as bioethics in the 1960s–70s. Notable milestones include the work of Beauchamp and Childress, who formulated principlism, and early guidelines such as the Helsinki Declaration and Belmont Report.

Methods and institutions: Bioethics combines philosophy, law, medicine, and social sciences to analyze cases, develop guidelines, and inform policy. Ethics committees and Institutional Review Boards assess research protocols and clinical practices. Public engagement and education support culturally sensitive decision-making.

Global and practical relevance: Bioetika informs clinical decisions, research governance, health policy, and education, guiding how societies respond to new technologies while protecting human rights and social values.
