Biodentine is a calcium silicate–based cement developed as a dentin substitute and pulp-capping material. Marketed by Septodont, it is designed to closely mimic natural dentin and to support vital pulp therapy. It is often presented as an alternative to mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) due to its bioactive properties and handling characteristics.

The material's powder contains tricalcium silicate, dicalcium silicate, calcium carbonate, and zirconium oxide as a radiopacifier. The liquid includes a calcium chloride-based setting accelerator and a water-soluble polymer. When mixed, Biodentine forms a radiopaque, biocompatible cement that interacts with dentin and surrounding tissues.

Indications for Biodentine include vital pulp therapy such as indirect and direct pulp capping and pulpotomy, as well as dentin replacement in deep cavities. It has also been used for repair of root perforations and as a root-end filling in certain cases, reflecting its versatility as a restorative cement with bioactive properties.

Biodentine sets in the presence of moisture and releases calcium and silicon ions, which promote the formation of reparative dentin and dentin remineralization. It creates a seal at the dentin interface and demonstrates good biocompatibility with pulp tissue, contributing to favorable healing responses.

Advantages cited for Biodentine include its bioactivity, sealing ability, and radiopacity, along with a relatively rapid initial set compared with some alternatives. Limitations noted in practice include higher cost and technique sensitivity. While evidence supports its effectiveness for several indications, the strength of data can vary by use, and clinicians consider material properties and clinical needs when selecting a restorative cement.
