A bimetallic system is one where both gold and silver are used as the standard for the value of money, typically with a fixed ratio between the two metals. Historically, many countries adopted bimetallic standards to provide stability and flexibility in their coinage. The value of currency was then defined by a specific weight of either gold or silver.

The fixed ratio between gold and silver was crucial in a bimetallic system. This ratio was set by law, and it determined how many units of silver were equivalent to one unit of gold.
