Bimetalliliuska, or bimetallic strip in English, is a composite metallic material made from two different metals with different coefficients of thermal expansion bonded together. When the temperature changes, the two metals expand or contract at different rates, causing the strip to bend. This bending action is predictable and proportional to the temperature change.

The primary application of bimetallic strips is in temperature-sensitive devices. They are commonly found in thermostats for regulating temperature in homes and appliances. When the temperature rises, the strip bends in a specific direction, which can then activate or deactivate a switch, thus controlling a heating or cooling system. Similarly, they are used in circuit breakers as a safety mechanism. If the current becomes too high, the heat generated by the resistance in the circuit causes the bimetallic strip to bend and trip a switch, interrupting the flow of electricity and preventing damage. Other uses include temperature gauges, oven thermometers, and flasher units for automotive turn signals, where the heating and cooling cycle of a filament causes the bimetallic strip to repeatedly bend and unbend, creating the flashing effect. The choice of metals for the strip depends on the desired temperature range and sensitivity.
