Bildregistrering, also known as image registration, is the process of aligning two or more images of the same scene, taken at different times, from different viewpoints, or by different sensors. The goal is to find a geometric transformation that maps points in one image to corresponding points in another. This transformation can be rigid, such as translation and rotation, or non-rigid, allowing for more complex deformations.

The primary purpose of bildregistrering is to enable comparison or integration of information from multiple images. This is crucial in various fields. In medical imaging, it allows for the fusion of data from different modalities like MRI and CT scans, or to track changes in a patient's anatomy over time for diagnosis and treatment monitoring. Remote sensing utilizes image registration to combine satellite or aerial images for change detection, map updating, or creating composite images. In computer vision, it's fundamental for tasks like object recognition, motion tracking, and creating panoramic views.

The process typically involves several steps. First, a set of corresponding features or control points are identified in both images. These could be distinct points, edges, or textures. Next, a transformation model is chosen based on the expected geometric relationship between the images. Finally, the transformation is computed and applied to one of the images to align it with the other. Various algorithms exist for feature detection, correspondence matching, and transformation estimation, each with its own strengths and weaknesses depending on the image content and the required accuracy.
