Bijholtenklachten, often referred to as sinus problems, describe a range of symptoms associated with inflammation or infection of the paranasal sinuses. These air-filled cavities, located within the bones of the face and skull, are lined with mucous membranes that produce mucus. Normally, this mucus drains into the nasal passages, helping to humidify inhaled air and trap foreign particles.

When the sinuses become blocked or inflamed, typically due to a viral infection like the common cold, or sometimes bacterial infections or allergies, the mucus cannot drain properly. This buildup can lead to pressure and pain. Common symptoms include facial pain or pressure, often felt around the eyes, cheeks, or forehead, which may worsen when bending over. Nasal congestion, a runny nose with thick, discolored mucus, and a reduced sense of smell are also characteristic. Headaches, toothache in the upper jaw, and a persistent cough, especially at night, can also occur. In some cases, individuals may experience fatigue and a feeling of fullness in the ears.

The duration of symptoms can vary. Acute sinusitis typically lasts for a few weeks, while chronic sinusitis can persist for 12 weeks or longer, significantly impacting quality of life. Diagnosis is usually based on a patient's reported symptoms and a physical examination. In persistent or severe cases, further investigations like nasal endoscopy or imaging studies might be employed. Treatment aims to reduce inflammation, promote sinus drainage, and treat any underlying infection.
