Key duties of bibliotekari include collection development and management, cataloging and metadata work, reference and information services, and readers’ advisory. They also design and deliver information literacy instruction, manage interlibrary loans, oversee digital libraries and archives, and participate in preservation and digitization efforts. In many settings they assist with data management, privacy, and copyright compliance, and help users evaluate information in an era of misinformation. Strong communication, customer service, and problem-solving skills are essential, as is comfort with technology and database search tools.

Education and professional pathways typically involve a degree in library and information science (LIS) or information studies. Some jurisdictions require certification or membership in a library association. Workplaces include public libraries, academic libraries, school libraries, and special libraries in corporate, government, or medical settings. Roles can range from general reference work to specialized positions in digital curation, archival work, or data services.

Historically, librarians emerged as organized actors in education and culture as public libraries expanded in the 19th and 20th centuries. Today, the profession continues to evolve with digitization, open access, and new information ecosystems. Challenges include funding pressures, copyright and privacy concerns, and ensuring equitable access to information for diverse communities.
