Beszél is a Hungarian verb meaning “to speak” or “to talk.” It denotes the act of producing spoken language in everyday conversation, language use, or public speech. The verb can describe speaking with someone (valakivel) or about a topic (valamiről), and it is often used with the languages one speaks, for example in the sentence “Magyarul beszélek” (I speak Hungarian).

In present indicative, the forms are: én beszélek, te beszélsz, ő beszél, mi beszélünk, ti beszéltek, ők beszélnek. The past tense is formed regularly: beszéltem, beszéltél, beszélt, beszéltünk, beszéltetek, beszéltek. The future can be expressed with the auxiliary fog: én fogok beszélni. Imperative forms exist as well: beszélj (informal singular), beszéljetek (informal plural), and in formal usage, beszéljen és beszéljenek. The verb’s infinitive is beszélni, and its participle is beszélt.

Beszél is closely related to beszélgetés (conversation) and beszéd (speech, discourse). Other common derivatives include beszélő (speaker) and beszélés (speech or act of speaking).
