Beszédmegértés, often translated as speech comprehension or understanding spoken language, refers to the cognitive process by which humans interpret and make sense of auditory linguistic information. It is a fundamental aspect of human communication, enabling individuals to follow conversations, understand instructions, and engage with the spoken word. This complex process involves a series of interconnected stages.

Initially, auditory signals are received by the ear and converted into neural impulses. These impulses are then processed by the brain's auditory cortex, where basic acoustic features like pitch, loudness, and timing are identified. Following this, phonological processing occurs, where the brain recognizes and distinguishes individual speech sounds, or phonemes. This leads to the identification of words.

Lexical access is the next crucial step, where the recognized words are retrieved from the mental lexicon, our internal dictionary of words and their meanings. Semantic processing then follows, involving the comprehension of the meaning of individual words and how they relate to each other within a sentence or utterance. Finally, syntactic processing analyzes the grammatical structure of the sentence to understand the relationships between words and their roles in conveying meaning. Contextual information, including the speaker's tone of voice, facial expressions, and the surrounding environment, also plays a significant role in disambiguating meaning and facilitating effective speech comprehension. Difficulties in any of these stages can lead to impaired speech understanding.
