Berichters is a Dutch term historically used to describe a person who writes or transmits news and information for public dissemination. The word comes from bericht (report, message) with the agent suffix -er; in modern Dutch the form berichter is rarely used, with journalist or verslaggever occupying the standard terms.

Role and function: Berichters gathered information from sources, verified facts where possible, and composed reports that were distributed to printers, publishers, or directly to audiences via pamphlets, newspapers, or broadcasts. Their work overlapped with other early forms of print journalism, including correspondents, editors, and columnists. Depending on period and context, a berichter could function as a court reporter, a municipal scribe, or a street-corner informant who forwarded local news to a printing house.

Historical development: The term is most closely associated with the early modern to early industrial press in Dutch-speaking regions, when newspapers began to regularize news flows. Over time, the role became more specialized and the vocabulary shifted toward verslaggever (reporter) and journalist.

Legacy and usage: In contemporary Dutch, berichter is largely archaic or literary. Some historical writings and dialects retain the term.
