Benforsyning refers to the vascular supply to bone tissue, including the arterial input that delivers oxygen and nutrients and the venous drainage that removes waste products. In long bones, the primary source is the nutrient artery, which enters through a nutrient foramen near the mid-diaphysis and branches within the medullary cavity to nourish the inner cortical bone and the marrow. Additional arterial input comes from periosteal vessels that accompany the outer cortex, supplying the periosteum and outer layers of compact bone. At the ends of bones, metaphyseal and epiphyseal arteries provide blood to the growth regions and to the cancellous bone, ensuring perfusion during development and in adulthood.
