In most renderings, benevne denotes both the practice of reciprocal exchange and the accompanying ethical code that members uphold to sustain communal wellbeing. The term is described as originating in the constructed language of Benevnia, where it combines a root meaning "good" with a suffix denoting action or practice, roughly translating to "the practice of good toward others."

Benevne networks are organized into circles of five to twelve households. Each cycle assigns members to provide aid to a rotating beneficiary, while a ledger tracks contributions, loans, and services.
