Beetahapettumisreitillä, often translated as the "beta-oxidation pathway" in English, is a fundamental metabolic process that occurs in living organisms. It is primarily responsible for the breakdown of fatty acids to generate energy. This pathway takes place in the mitochondria of eukaryotic cells.

The process begins with the activation of a fatty acid, which is converted into a fatty acyl-CoA molecule. This activated fatty acid then enters the beta-oxidation spiral. Each turn of the spiral involves a series of four enzymatic reactions: oxidation, hydration, oxidation, and cleavage. These reactions result in the removal of a two-carbon unit from the fatty acid chain, which is released as acetyl-CoA.

Acetyl-CoA can then enter the citric acid cycle (also known as the Krebs cycle) to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the main energy currency of the cell. For saturated fatty acids, the beta-oxidation pathway systematically shortens the carbon chain by two carbons at a time until the entire fatty acid is degraded into acetyl-CoA units. Unsaturated fatty acids require additional enzymes to handle the double bonds.
