Beeldvelden, a Dutch term often translated as "image fields" or "visual fields," refers to the entire area that an individual can see at any given moment without moving their eyes. This concept is crucial in ophthalmology and optometry for assessing a person's peripheral vision, which is the part of sight that occurs outside of the very center of gaze. A comprehensive understanding of a patient's beeldvelden is essential for diagnosing and monitoring a wide range of eye conditions, including glaucoma, optic nerve damage, and neurological disorders that can affect the visual pathways.

The examination of beeldvelden is typically conducted using a visual field test, also known as perimetry. During this test, a patient is asked to look straight ahead at a central fixation point. Then, small lights or stimuli are presented at various points within the peripheral vision. The patient indicates when they see each stimulus, allowing the clinician to map out the boundaries of their visual field and detect any areas of reduced sensitivity or blind spots (scotomas). These tests can be performed manually by an examiner or, more commonly today, using automated perimeters. The results are often presented as charts or graphs, illustrating the sensitivity of different parts of the visual field. Deviations from a normal beeldveld can provide critical diagnostic clues.
